Benzylpenicillin & Phenoxymethyl penicillin
All beta lactum antibiotics bind to bacterial cell receptors. These receptors are involved in the cross-linking of peptide side chain-transpeptidation reaction. Gram-positive bacteria have more receptors for beta lactums than gram-negative organisms. After beta lactums have attached to the cell receptors, peptidoglycan synthesis (cell wall) is inhibited because the activity of transpeptidation enzyme is blocked leads to the formation of defective cell wall that are osmotically unstable. Cell death result from cell lysis.
Add 3 ml of water for injection and shake vigorously. Adults: 4,00,000 units once daily or twice daily. Children: Over 25 kg as for adults; under 25 kg reduce proportionally. In severe cases dose may be doubled. Intramuscular injection is the only route of administration of Procaine Penicillin.
Hypersensitivity to penicillin. Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Renal impairment. CHF. Infant. Elderly.
Allergic reactions may occur but usually resolve on cessation of therapy.
