Mebendazole is indicated for the treatment of pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), round worm (Ascaris lumbricoides), hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), whip worm (Trichuris trichiura), tape worm (Taenia solium and taenia saginata) and threadworm (Strongyloides stercoralis) in single or mixed infections
Mebendazole is a synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic that is active against most nematodes and some other worms. Mebendazole is principally used in the treatment of intestinal nematode infection. Mebendazole inhibits the formation of the worms' microtubules and causes the worms' glucose depletion. After oral administration about 2-10% of oral dose is absorbed from Gl tract and peak plasma concentration occurs within 30 minutes to 7 hours. Mebendazole is highly bound to plasma protein. Elimination half-life is 2.8 to 9 hours.
Adult : PO Ascariasis; Hookworm infections; Trichuriasis 100 mg bid for 3 days or 500 mg as a single dose. Enterobiasis 100 mg as single dose; may repeat after 2-3 wk if needed. May be taken with or without food.
Preliminary evidence suggests that cimetidine inhibits mebendazole metabolism and may result in an increase in plasma concentration.
Mebendazole is contraindicated in pregnancy and in patients who have shown hypersensitivity to the product or any of its components. Hepatic impairment. Children. Pregnancy and lactation.
Mebendazole is well tolerated by adults and children. It has virtually no side effects. Transient abdominal pain and diarrhoea have been reported only rarely, in case of massive infestation and expulsion of worms.
Category C: Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the foetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus.
In the event of accidental overdosage, gastrointestinal complaints lasting up to a few hours may occur. Vomiting and purging should be induced.
Store in a cool (Below 25°C temperature) and dry place, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
