This medication is used to treat psoriasis. It helps to reduce the redness, thickening, and scaling of the skin that occurs with this condition. Healthy skin lowers your risk for infection and protects you against the environment. This product contains 2 drugs. Betamethasone is a very strong corticosteroid drug that works by decreasing swelling, redness, and itching. Calcipotriene is a form of vitamin D. It is also known as calcipotriol in other countries. It works by slowing down the growth of skin cells so that they don't build up into thickened, scaly skin patches.
Betamethasone Dipropionate is a potent topically-active corticosteroid producing prompt, marked and prolonged anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, vasoconstrictive and immunosuppressive properties, without curing the underlying condition. These effects can be enhanced under occlusive conditions due to increased penetration of stratum corneum (by approximately a factor of 10).
Calcipotriol is a non-steroidal antipsoriatic agent, derived from vitamin D. Calcipotriol exhibits a vitamin D-like effect by competing for the 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor. Calcipotriol is as potent as 1,25(OH)2D3, the naturally occurring active form of vitamin D, in regulating cell proliferation and cell differentiation, but much less active than 1,25(OH)2D3 in its effect on calcium metabolism. Calcipotriol induces differentiation and suppresses proliferation (without any evidence of a cytotoxic effect) of keratinocytes, thus reversing the abnormal keratinocyte changes in psoriasis. The therapeutic goal envisaged with Calcipotriol is thus a normalization of epidermal growth.
Plaque Psoriasis Suspension (scalp and body): Apply to affected area(s) qDay for up to 8 weeks; may discontinue treatment earlier, if cleared; not to exceed 100 g/week Ointment: Apply topical layer of ointment to affected area(s) qDay for up to 4 weeks; do not exceed 100 g/week Foam: Apply topically to affected area(s) qDay for up to 4 weeks
Additive adverse effects when used with other steroids.
Contraindications Hypersensitivity Known or suspected disorders of calcium metabolism Erythrodermic, exfoliative, and/or pustular psoriasis Precautions Hypercalcemia observed with use of calcipotriene Discontinue if irritation develops Do not apply to on face, axillae, or groin Do not apply to areas of pre-existing skin atrophy If concomitant skin infection present/develops, apply appropriate antifungal or antibacterial agent
Pruritus, Worsening psoriasis, Skin atrophy, Folliculitis, Burning sensation, Skin depigmentation, Ecchymosis, Erythema, Hand dermatitis.
Pregnancy The limited data on use in pregnant women are not sufficient to evaluate associated risk for major birth defects, miscarriages, or adverse maternal or fetal outcomes; observational studies suggest an increased risk of having low birthweight infants with the maternal use of potent or very potent topical corticosteroids; advise pregnant women that therapy may increase potential risk of having a low birth weight infant and to use product on smallest area of skin and for shortest duration possible; in animal reproduction studies. Lactation There is no information regarding presence of topically administered calcipotriene and betamethasone dipropionate in human milk, effects on breastfed infant, or on milk production; not known whether topically administered calcipotriene or corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in human milk; developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with mother$#$#$#$s clinical need for therapy and any potential adverse effects on breastfed child from therapy or from underlying maternal condition; to minimize potential exposure to breastfed infant via breast milk, use drug on smallest area of skin and for shortest duration possible while breastfeeding; advise breastfeeding women not to apply drug directly to nipple and areola to avoid direct infant exposure
