Montmorency Tart cherry (Prunus cerasus) is an indigenous plant of North America. Major active constituents of Tart cherry are anthocyanins mainly cyanidin-3 -glucosylrutinoside and cyanidin-3- rutinoside. Tart cherry inhibits xanthine oxidase so that monosodium crystal is not formed in the joints and also reduces the extraction of urate from the kidney. It suppresses the expression of inflammatory markers and also cyclooxygenase enzymes. It also has the capacity to scavenge free radicals. Tart cherry is widely used for the treatment of gout, muscle pain and stiffness, joint pain, and inflammation due to osteoarthritis and also peripheral neuropathy. It also contains an adequate amount of natural melatonin that maintains the normal sleep cycle by binding with the pineal gland. It is also used to maintain a healthy cholesterol level.
