Gentamicin is used to treat serious bacterial infections in many different parts of the body such as chest infections, urinary tract infections and infected wounds or burns.
Aminoglycoside; Antibacterial
Gentamicin Sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic. It is a proven bactericidal antibiotic active against Gram-positive & Gram-negative pathogens including E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and penicillin resistant strains of Staph. aureus. In common with other aminoglycoside antibiotics, it appears to interfere with protein synthesis of the bacterial cell.
INTRAMUSCULAR Susceptible infections; Biliary tract Infections; Brucellosis; Cat scratch disease; Cystic fibrosis; Endocarditis; Endometritis; Gastroenteritis; Granuloma inguinale; Listeriosis; Meningitis; Otitis externa; Pelvic inflammatory disease; Peritonitis; Plague; Pneumonia; Septicaemia; Skin infections; Urinary tract infections: Adult: 3-5 mg/kg/day, given in divided doses every 8 hr for 7-10 days. Child: 2 wk: 3 mg/kg every 12 hr; 2 wk-12 yr: 2 mg/ kg every 8 hr. Prophylaxis of surgical infections: Adult: 120 mg before induction of anaesthesia, in combination w/ penicillin, vancomycin or teicoplanin.
Concurrent use with other potentially nephrotoxic or ototoxic drug substances should be avoided. Potent diuretics such as ethacrynic acid or frusemide may potentiate ototoxic effects of gentamicin. As gentamicin is inactivated by solutions containing beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins & cephalosporins), the two drugs should not be administered simultaneously.
History of hypersensitivity to aminoglycoside; pregnancy; hepatic impairment, perforated ear drum. Concurrent use of neuromuscular blocking agents: myasthenia gravis, parkinsonism; conditions predisposing to ototoxicity & nephrotoxicity; lactation. Monitor plasma concentrations of gentamicin in patients receiving high doses or prolonged courses, in infants, elderly, patients w/ renal impairment, cystic fibrosis or significant obesity. Monitor auditory & renal functions.
Dizziness or vertigo; acute renal failure, interstitial nephritis, acute tubular necrosis; electrolyte imbalances; transient elevation of serum bilirubin & aminotransferases: purpura; nausea, vomiting; convulsions, mental depression. hallucinations. Atrophy or rat necrosis at inj sites. Nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity & neuromuscular blockade (may unmask or aggravate myasthaenia gravis).
This drug should be used during pregnancy only if the benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. Use is not recommended and a decision should be made to discontinue breastfeeding or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
