Desloratadine is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as watery eyes, runny nose, itching eyes/nose, sneezing, hives, and itching. It works by blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that your body makes during an allergic reaction.
H1 -Receptor Antagonist; Antiallergy
Desloratadine, the major active metabolite of Loratadine, is a non-sedating; long acting tricyclic histamine antagonist with selective H1-receptor histamine antagonist activity. Desloratadine also inhibits histamine release from human mast cell.
ORAL Allergic conditions: Adult: 5 mg once daily. Child: 12 yr: 5 mg once daily; 6-11 yr: 2.5mg; 1-5yr: 1.25 mg;6-11 mth: 1 mg. Doses to be taken once daily.
No clinically relevant drug interactions have been reported.
Hypersensitivity. Severe renal or hepatic failure; child <6 mth, elderly, epilepsy, pregnancy & lactation.
Headache, fatigue, somnolence, dizziness; nausea, dyspepsia; xerostomia, dysmenorrhoea; pharyngitis.
Not recommended during pregnancy. Considering the minimal exposure of a nursing infant to the drugs through breast milk, maternal use of loratadine, desloratadine, or fexofenadine in a standard therapeutic dose is unlikely to result in adverse effects in nursing infants and is considered to be compatible with breastfeeding.
No clinically relevant adverse effects have been reported.
