For the prevention and reversal of bronchospasm in patients 12 years of age and older with asthma and reversible bronchospasm associated with bronchitis and emphysema. Bambuterol is a long acting beta2-adrenoceptor agonist used in the treatment of asthma.
Beta-2 Agonist; Antiasthmatic
Bambuterol, a prodrug of terbutaline, is a long acting ß2 adrenergic receptor agonist used in the treatment of asthma. Bambuterol is an adrenergic ß2 receptor agonist which predominantly stimulates ß2 receptor, thus producing relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle, inhibition of release of endogenous spasmogens, inhibition of edema caused by endogenous mediators & increased mucocilliary clearance.
ORAL Persistent reversible airways obstruction: Adult: 10-20 mg once daily at bedtime.
Succinylcholin, MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), ß2-blockers, corticosteroids, diuretics, muscle relaxants, sympathomimetic xanthine derivatives.
Severe hepatic impairment; cirrhosis. DM, hyperthyroidism, myocardial insufficiency, arrhythmias, susceptibility to QT-interval prolongation. Pregnancy.
Fine tremor of skeletal muscle (e.g. hands), palpitations & muscle cramps; tachycardia, tenseness & peripheral vasodilation.
Pregnant women: There is no definite evidence of ill consequence during pregnancy. Nevertheless, the drug should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy, unless the expected benefit is thought to outweigh any possible risk to the fetus. Lactating mother: It is excreted in breast milk. So, patients taking this drug should not breast-feed.
No case of bambuterol overdosage has yet been reported in human. It is likely that overdosing would result in high levels of terbutaline & therefore the same symptoms & signs may include: headache, anxiety, tremor, nausea, tonic muscle cramps, palpitations, tachycardia & cardiac arrythmias. A fall in blood pressure sometimes occurs after terbutaline overdosage.
Laboratory findings: hyperglycaemia and lactacidosis sometimes occur. High doses of ß2-agonists may
cause hypokalemia as a result of redistribution of potassium.
Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light & moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
